Omaha Knocks Off Marquette, 97-89

Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Omaha men's basketball team put together an outstanding shooting performance for a huge win on Saturday afternoon, knocking off Marquette 97-89 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. The Mavericks improved to 2-1 (0-0 Summit League) with the victory, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 1-2 (0-0 BIG EAST).

Five Mavericks scored in double figures, led by a career-high 26 points from junior guard Devin Patterson and a season-high 25 by senior guard CJ Carter. Patterson went 7-of-12 from the field and 11-of -12 from the free throw line, adding six rebounds, a career-high-tying eight assists and a steal. Carter was 7-of-13 from the floor with a trio of 3-pointers and an 8-of-10 effort at the line. He added two rebounds, three helpers and two steals.

Senior forward Mike Rostampour tallied his second double-double in three games and the fifth of his career, totaling 11 points and 11 boards. Freshman forward Tre'Shawn Thurman posted a season-high 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting along with seven rebounds, an assist and a block. Redshirt freshman forward Rylan Murry rounded it out with 10 points off the bench, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of threes.

Junior guard Marcus Tyus chipped in another nine points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

As a team, Omaha shot a season-best 57 percent (32-of-56) from the floor, including 63 percent (15-of-24) in the second half. The Mavericks shot at an 87 percent clip (26-of-30) at the free throw line and outworked Marquette on the glass, 40-24.

Omaha's strong shooting was evident from the beginning, as the Mavericks shot 53 percent in the first half with 16 points from Carter and 12 from Patterson. UNO opened the game on a 12-2 run with the attack coming from Carter, Patterson and Tyus. A pair of 3-pointers off the bench by Duane Wilson eventually cut UNO's margin to four at 17-13, and two minutes later, a pair of Sandy Cohen free throws made it a two-point ballgame. Carter immediately hit a trey and added two more free throws to push the advantage to seven.

With 7:24 left, Carter drove to the rim and built Omaha a nine-point lead before MU came within three on a Derrick Wilson layup. Murry then drained a three to stretch the lead to 39-33, but Marquette again sheared the margin to two. UNO came right back as Patterson kicked it out to Carter, who drilled a trey, and UNO stood with a 42-37 lead with 2:32 to go. Marquette put together another late push with two layups by Juan Anderson, but Omaha still held the upper hand with a 44-41 lead at the break.

The second half saw Marquette battle back, but Omaha weathered the Golden Eagles tying the game four times. MU knotted the score at 66-66, but it was the last time UNO would relinquish its lead. Quick buckets from Tyus and Smallwood spurred the Mavericks ahead by four with 7:55 to go, and free throws from Rostampour and Patterson, coupled with a Patterson three, made it 77-68 with 6:39 left. Omaha then went up by double digits on a triple by Rostampour and took their largest lead of the game at 81-68 as Patterson hit another foul shot.

Continuing to hold a double-digit advantage at 92-80, Marquette made one last push on a Matt Carlino three and four points by Duane Wilson, cutting it to a six-point margin with 0:28 remaining. A Wilson 3-pointer was then blocked by Thurman before an Anderson tip-in made it 95-89. In the final 25 seconds, Patterson nailed four free throws attempts, and the Mavericks sealed their win at 97-89.

Marquette had five players score in double figures: Anderson (23), Derrick Wilson (17), Duane Wilson (15), Deonte Burton (12) and Carlino (12). The Golden Eagles shot 47 percent (33-of-71) from the field, 22 percent (6-of-27) from long range and 74 percent (17-of-23) at the charity stripe.

Omaha returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25, traveling to in-state foe Nebraska. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb., and the game will be nationally broadcast on ESPN3.
