Box Score TULSA, Okla. – The Omaha men's soccer team opened the road portion of their Summit League schedule in Tulsa, Okla. UNO and Oral Roberts played to a 0-0 draw in double overtime.
Omaha is now 4-3-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in Summit League play. Oral Roberts is 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.
“Tonight was an ugly game for us,” commented head coach Jason Mims. “We had too many short possessions, silly fouls, and cheap giveaways. We really didn't find our rhythm tonight.”
Omaha was outshot on the evening by a 16-12 margin, but held a 5-3 margin in shots on goal. Logan Mendez led the team with two shots on goal. Christian Garcia, Xavier Gomez, and Emir Alihodzic each had shots on goal.
Despite the draw, Mims was pleased with the team's tenacity. “I am happy the boys continued to battle and earned another shutout in conference play. Oral Roberts is a team that has scored a lot of goals at home and we shut them out.”
Omaha's Xavier Gomez had the best scoring chance for the Mavericks. Gomez gathered a ball in the penalty area. His shot forced ORU goalkeeper Ben LaCourse to make a save. Johnny Chavez of Oral Roberts had his chance to win the game in the 90th minute. Chavez had beaten the Omaha goalkeeper, but his shot hit the post as regulation expired.
“We need to get back to Omaha and have a great week of training,” Mims said. “We have another tough conference match on the road next weekend.”
Omaha returns to action on Saturday, October 11 against Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
