OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's basketball team capped the 2012-13 season on Saturday afternoon, falling 84-57 to North Dakota State at Ralston Arena. In their second year of a four-year reclassification to Division I, the Mavericks finished with a record of 11-20 (6-10 Summit League), while the Bison improved to 22-8 (12-4 Summit League) and move on to the conference tournament.
Freshman guard
Marcus Tyus paced UNO with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, and he pulled down a team-best four rebounds. Junior forward
Matt Hagerbaumer also grabbed four boards and had two points.
Junior guard
Justin Simmons chipped in nine points, three rebounds, three assists and a block. Sophomore guard
CJ Carter posted eight points, while junior guard
Alex Phillips added four of his own. Senior forward
Alex Welhouse and junior center
John Karhoff matched each other in scoring with five points apiece.
North Dakota State was led by three players with double-figure scoring efforts: Taylor Braun (22 points), Marshall Bjorklund (18) and TrayVonn Wright (15). For his part, Bjorklund shot 8-of-9 from the floor, while Wright notched six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Jordan Aaberg topped NDSU on the glass with eight rebounds.
The Bison shot .577 (30-of-52) to UNO's .333 (21-of-63), and they finished at .412 (7-of-17) from long range to the Mavericks' .176 (3-of-17).
Saturday also marked Senior Day for Welhouse and senior guards
Tyler Egli and
Jacques Coleman, and the Mavericks held special festivities prior to tipoff to honor their careers. Welhouse closes his career ranked ninth in school history with 150 3-pointers made.
