Men's Basketball Omaha Athletics

Gophers Stop Mavericks' Streak, 92-79

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Despite another strong effort deep into the game, the Omaha men's basketball team saw its five-game win streak snapped by Minnesota Friday night, falling 92-79 at Williams Arena. The Mavericks are now 8-4 (0-0 Summit League), while the Golden Gophers improve to 10-2 (0-0 Big Ten).

Four Mavericks finished in double figures, led by 15 points apiece from three Maverick guards: senior Alex Phillips, junior CJ Carter and sophomore Devin Patterson. Phillips' effort was a season best spurred by 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, and he added four rebounds and a steal. Patterson finished with a team-best six rebounds and four assists, and Carter chipped in three boards, five assists and a steal.

Sophomore guard Marcus Tyus, playing in his home state, totaled 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal for the night. Junior forward Mike Rostampour, also a native of Minnesota, totaled six points, five boards, a blocks and a steal.

Minnesota had five players in double figures, paced by a double-double from Andre Hollins, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds while passing the 1,000 career points milestone. DeAndre Mathieu finished with a game-leading 27 points on 9-of-11 shooting, and the Gophers also had 19 points from Malik Smith, who hit five 3-pointers. Minnesota's scoring corps was rounded out by 10 points each from Elliott Eliason and Austin Hollins.

As a team, Omaha finished at 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field, 42 percent (10-of-24) from 3-point range and 85 percent (17-of-20) from the line. Minnesota came in at a 52 percent (31-of-60) shooting from the floor, 39 percent 9-of-23) from long range and 72 percent (21-of-29) from the charity stripe.

The Mavericks battled right with Minnesota in a back-and-forth first half with eight lead changes, largely in part due to their outstanding 3-point shooting. Omaha drained 10-of-16 from long range, hitting the most first-half threes of any Maverick squad since Nov. 24, 2007. Phillips accounted for four of those treys, but it was a final triple from the right corner from senior guard Caleb Steffensmeier, dropping in at the halftime buzzer, that left Omaha and Minnesota tied at 44-44 by the break.

In the second half, a Carter layup gave Omaha a quick lead, but it was short lived as Smith single-handedly took the Gophers out to an 11-point margin at 71-60 with a 10-4 run. The Mavericks did not relent, shearing it down to a three-point game at 74-71 with 6:55 to go. Minnesota, however, used three baskets and a free throw from Mathieu to go up 85-79 with less than three minutes left, then finished it out with a final tally of 92-79.

Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 22, hosting Seattle. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Ralston Arena, and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com. The game will also be broadcast live on KZOT 1180 AM with Gary Sharp and Grant Nieland on the call.
