OMAHA, Neb. –
The UNO men's basketball team took its third win in five days on Sunday, defeating Doane 79-68 at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the victory and their three-game winning streak, the Mavericks improve to 10-15 on the year, while Doane is 10-14 (5-11 GPAC).

Senior guard Mitch Albers topped the Mavericks with 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting and a pair of 3-pointers. The Papillion, Neb., native added three rebounds, two assists and a block, and he now has 1,726 points in his four-year career. Albers is 90 points away from tying UNO's all-time scoring leader Dean Thompson, who had 1,816 points as a Maverick. Albers' two treys also moved him up to fourth in school history for career threes made.

Junior forward Alex Welhouse narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 12 points and a game-leading nine rebounds. Sophomore center John Karhoff chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block for the day.

In addition, sophomore guard Caleb Steffensmeier totaled eight points with a pair of threes, along with two rebounds, three assists, a pair of blocks and three steals.

As a team, Nebraska Omaha outrebounded Doane 40-37 and compiled six blocked shots.

Doane was led by Ty Headley, who finished 6-for-9 from behind the arc, totaling 23 points with five rebounds. Bryan Meyer added 17 points and five boards, and Joshua Riser contributed 10 points, 10 assists and another five rebounds for a double-double. Jens Scholl added eight points and eight rebounds for the afternoon.

Albers put up 15 points in the first half alone, and UNO shot 15-for-30 from the field. Doane kept it tight early in the game, helped by a trio of threes by Headley, whose final trey knotted the score at 15-15. UNO roared back, as a 12-0 run punctuated by back-to-back 3-pointers from Steffensmeier and Welhouse gave the Mavericks a 27-15 lead at 12:14. A three from Andy Morris brought the Tigers back within a nine-point deficit, and five straight points from Meyer later cut it to a 32-25 margin.

With just over three minutes left in the half, Steffensmeier had a key steal and assisted a layup by Albers that stretched it to 39-27. Doane's Josh Shoecraft hit a jumper that made it 39-29, but sophomore Isiah Gandy's 3-pointer at the buzzer spotted Nebraska Omaha a 42-29 advantage by halftime.

In the second half, the Mavs' shooting cooled off slightly to a 41 percent effort, while Doane fired at 48 percent and was helped by another trio of threes from Headley. He accounted for 14 points over the last 20 minutes, while Riser had an additional 10, which helped the Tigers outscore UNO 39-37 in the second stanza. Nebraska Omaha took its largest lead at 14:35, going up by 23 on a Bill Freeman layup. From there, the Tigers went on a 9-4 scoring run, capped by a Headley three, to make it 64-48.

With less than two minutes to go, Riser had a 3-pointer followed by a layup to shear the margin to nine at 75-66. Carter made a free throw and freshman guard Mitchell Farr knocked in a trey to put the lead back in double digits, and despite a final tip-in at the buzzer by Headley, the Mavericks earned the 79-68 win.

UNO returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 12, hosting Cal State Bakersfield. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse, and the game will feature special Senior Day festivities to honor seniors Mitch Albers and John Ring. The Mavericks host their final home game on Wednesday, Feb. 15, bringing in Nebraska-Kearney on Alumni Night, which marks UNO's final appearance at Sapp Fieldhouse before moving to the new Ralston Sports and Event Center in 2012-13.
