Iowa State Tops Mavericks, 93-65

AMES, Iowa –
The Omaha men's basketball team continued its tough 10-game road stretch Sunday evening, falling 93-65 to Iowa State in front of a crowd of 12,785 at Hilton Coliseum. The Mavericks drop to 2-9 (0-2 Summit League), while the Cyclones improve to 7-3 (0-0 Big 12).

Junior center John Karhoff led the Mavericks with 13 points for the night. Freshman guard Marcus Tyus added 12 points with 5-of-9 shooting from the field and a pair of threes, as well as four rebounds and an assist. Junior guard Alex Phillips also finished in double figures, totaling 11 points with a trio of 3-pointers, four assists and a board.

Junior guard Caleb Steffensmeier totaled a season-best seven assists, which led all players, and added six points with two 3-pointers. Senior forward Alex Welhouse pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds and chipped in eight points with two treys and an assist.

Iowa State was paced by six players with double-figure scoring performances, led by 15 points from Georges Niang. He was joined by Will Clyburn (11 points), Anthony Booker (11), Tyrus McGee (11), Chris Babb (10) and Percy Gibson (10). Melvin Ejim had a strong effort on the glass, grabbing 13 rebounds.

As a team, Omaha shot 45 percent (24-of-53) from the field, as well as 48 percent from 3-point range (11-of-23). Iowa State finished at a 50 percent (36-of-72) clip from the floor and 33 percent (11-of-33) from long range. The Mavericks had 19 assists on their 24 shots. For its part, ISU forced 14 Maverick turnovers while committing just six miscues themselves and outrebounded UNO 45-24.

Iowa State took an early 18-2 lead with the help of 16 straight points, but the Mavericks answered with six straight baskets – including four 3-pointers from Tyus, Phillips and Steffensmeier to come within four at 22-18. The Cyclones came back with 13 unanswered points, then used two shorter spurts of 5-0 each and a closing three from Naz Long to lead 52-28 at halftime.

In the second half, Omaha got within 14 with back-to-back threes from Phillips and a dunk by junior Matt Hagerbaumer. Iowa State, however, took its largest lead of the game with just under five minutes to go, as a Gibson jumper made it 81-53. The Cyclones went on to take the win at 93-65, extending their home court win streak to 14 games at Hilton Coliseum.
