EDINBURG, Texas – The Omaha men's basketball team led with minutes left in the game but was unable to hang on for a road win over Texas-Pan American on Saturday, falling 80-72 at UTPA Fieldhouse. The Mavericks are now 3-11 (0-2 Summit League) on the year, while the Broncs improve to 6-8 (0-0 Great West).
Junior guard
Justin Simmons led UNO in scoring for the second straight game, totaling 17 points. He added five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Three other Mavericks finished with double-figure efforts: junior center
John Karhoff (14), senior forward
Alex Welhouse (12) and sophomore guard
CJ Carter (11). Welhouse pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds, swiped two steals and went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, moving up to 11th in school history with 123 threes made.
UTPA was paced by 19 points from Brandon Provost, who went 3-for-5 from long range and passed the 1,000 career points milestone. Aaron Urbanus and Jesus Delgado each posted 16 points, with Urbanus recording four 3-pointers. Justin Leathers led the Broncs on the glass with seven rebounds, along with eight points, two assists and two steals.
As a team, Omaha shot 49 percent (28-of-57) to UTPA's 48 percent. The Mavs were 43 percent from long range (6-of-14), while the Broncs finished at a 41 percent clip (7-of-17).
UNO led 43-35 at halftime, but a Provost three at 12:10 gave UTPA a 53-51 lead. The game remained close, stalling at a 70-70 tie on Lauri Toivonen's basket with three minutes to go. Leathers hit a free throw to give UTPA the 71-70 advantage it needed, and the Broncs went on to take the 80-72 win at home.
