DENVER, Colo. –
The Omaha men's basketball team fell 82-47 at the hands of hot-shooting Denver at Magness Arena on Saturday, closing a tough 10-game road swing. The Mavericks are now 2-10 (0-2 Summit League) on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 3-5 (0-0 WAC).

Senior forward Alex Welhouse led UNO with 12 points and six rebounds, chipping in a pair of threes. He needs just one trey to tie Patrick Voss for 11th in school history for career 3-pointers.

Junior forward Matt Hagerbaumer also had eight points, five rebounds and a block, and junior guard Caleb Steffensmeier posted five boards and three assists. Junior guard Justin Simmons added seven points, two rebounds and a block to his credit, and freshman guard Marcus Tyus totaled six points of his own.

Denver had five players with double-figure scoring efforts, led by Royce O'Neale's double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds. Chase Hallam, who went 4-for-6 from long range, finished with 12 points, followed by 11 apiece from Chris Udofia and Nate Engesser and another 10 from Cam Griffin. Udofia added a game-leading eight assists, five rebounds, three blocks and a steal.

Denver buried 14 threes as a team, shooting 58 percent (14-of-24) from beyond the arc and 60 percent (32-of-53) from the field. Omaha shot 37 percent (18-of-49) from the floor and 25 percent from long range (3-of-12).

Welhouse had two 3-pointers in the first three minutes to spot the Mavericks an early 10-7 lead, but Denver roared back, posting 25 unanswered points. The Pioneers made six threes in that span, going up 32-10, before Simmons broke up the run with a jump shot for UNO's first basket in nine minutes of play. Denver put up three more threes, shooting 65 percent from long range for the half to lead 45-15 by the break.

In the second half, Omaha improved its shooting to 41 percent, but DU cooled only slightly from 68 percent to 54 percent. The Pioneers tacked on another five 3-pointers, including a perfect 2-for-2 effort by Engesser, helping Denver to the win at 82-47.

Omaha returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 18, hosting Benedictine College for the Mavs' first home game since Nov. 11. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ralston Arena, and links to live video and live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
