Texas Tech Drops Mavericks, 91-63

LUBBOCK, Texas --
The Omaha men's basketball team trailed Texas Tech by just six at halftime but was unable to stake a rally, falling 91-63 Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena. The Mavericks are now 1-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Red Raiders improve to 2-0 (0-0 Big 12).

Junior guard Justin Simmons paced UNO with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while junior John Karhoff added 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Senior forward Alex Welhouse finished with 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting with a pair of threes, and junior guard Alex Phillips chipped in 10 points with two 3-pointers.

Sophomore guard CJ Carter finished with six rebounds, four assists, two points and a steal to his credit.

Texas Tech had three players with double-figure scoring, led by Jaye Crockett's double-double on 22 points and10 rebounds. Dejan Kravic had 20 points and six boards, and Josh Gray had 15 points and seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

As a team, Omaha shot 46.4 percent to TTU's 45.5 percent, though the Red Raiders improved from 39 percent in the first half to 55 percent in the second. The Red Raiders outrebounded the Mavericks 48-27 and forced 17 turnovers while committing just eight themselves.

Tech surged out to a 20-9 lead early in the game, but back-to-back threes from Phillips and Welhouse cut it to 20-15. The Red Raiders responded with an 8-0 run, and Phillips came in again with two buckets to make it 28-20. Late in the first stanza, the Mavs gained momentum with two baskets from Simmons, including a dunk on the feed from Carter, keeping the tally a manageable 43-37 by halftime.

TTU came out roaring in the second half, starting with a 14-6 run and putting up a stout defensive effort to give itself a 60-45 advantage. Following a score from Karhoff, the Red Raiders went out on an 8-0 stretch that was cut off by a Tyus jumper at the top of the key. Tech responded with a 3-pointer from to go ahead by 20, but Hagerbaumer worked inside for a score that made it 67-49. Texas Tech, however, put it away with 12 unanswered points, leading 79-53 with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Red Raiders closed out the contest with a final score of 91-63.
