OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's basketball team closed its first homestand Sunday evening, falling 96-86 to Saint Mary at Ralston Arena. The Mavericks are now 1-1 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while USM remains 2-3.

John Karhoff paced Omaha with 18 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Junior guard
Alex Phillips also finished in double figures with 16 points, two 3-pointers, three boards, three assists and a steal. Senior forward Koang Doluony totaled 11 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.

Alex Welhouse led the way on the boards, pulling down eight rebounds with eight points and two steals. Junior guard
Justin Simmons grabbed seven rebounds, five points, a game-leading six assists and two blocks, while freshman
Marcus Tyus had eight points, two steals and two helpers off the bench.
Saint Mary had four players with double-figure scoring: Jordan Wilcox (20), Shiron Williams (18), Jeb Greenberg (15) and Matt Heydman (13). Wilcox hit five 3-pointers, and Williams posted three of his own. Heydman added a team-leading six rebounds, while Williams had five steals.
Saint Mary took an early 7-3 lead with Wilcox's first three, but the Mavericks went on to outscore the Spires 46-31 for the remainder of the half. Tyus ignited the run with two breakaway dunks, the latter of which pushed UNO ahead 24-14. Three straight threes between Tyus and Phillips spotted Omaha a 36-18 score, and the Mavericks took a 49-38 lead by halftime.
The Spires, however, came out hot in the second half, opening with a 12-0 run to go ahead by one. Back-to-back baskets from Karhoff and Carter helped Omaha regain the lead at 53-50, but consecutive threes from Heydman and Williams put USM ahead 56-53 and spurred another run. USM shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half, including 73 percent from long range, going on to upset UNO, 96-85.
Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 14, traveling to Texas Tech. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas. The game will be broadcast on 1620 The Zone, and links to live stats, live video and live audio will be available on OMavs.com.
