JOPLIN, Mo. –
The UNO baseball team split its season-opening doubleheader with Augustana on Saturday, falling 5-4 in the first game before taking a 9-8 win in the second contest. The Mavericks are now 1-1 (0-0 MIAA) on the year, while Augustana moves to 4-2.

Junior outfielder Martin Sartin made a memorable debut in his first weekend as a Maverick, homering in both games.

GAME 1 – AUGUSTANA 5, UNO 4
Augustana opened with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, then tacked on another run in the third. UNO got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the third, scoring one run on senior Jed Hanson's RBI single down the right field line.

UNO managed three ore runs in the fourth, helped by Sartin hitting his first career home run as a Maverick. Sartin's homer was a two-run shot to right field that put the Mavs up 4-3.

Augustana came back to tie it up in the fifth, and the Vikings plated one more run in the eighth, which was all the scoring they needed to secure the win.

Zach Weinandt earned the win, while junior right-handed pitcher Scotty Donner (0-1) took the loss for UNO. Bret Severtson was also credited with the save.

Augustana totaled five runs on nine hits and committed no errors, while the Mavs finished with four runs on five hits and three errors.

GAME 2 – UNO 9, AUGUSTANA 8
Nebraska-Omaha came roaring back in the second contest, grabbing a 9-8 victory for their first win of 2011.

Sartin starred again for the Mavericks with his second home run of the day. The game was a slugfest for both teams, as Augie finished with 17 hits, and UNO recorded 14 in the nightcap.

The Mavericks jumped out first with a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then added another run in the top of the second. In the bottom of the frame, Augustana answered with two runs, but the Mavs held strong, chalking up a trio of scores.

Behind 6-3, the Vikings cut the margin with a pair of runs in the third, then knotted the game in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs.

UNO went back up 8-6 in the fifth, but one run from Augustana in the fifth and seventh innings tied the game again. The Mavericks made their final push with one run in the top of the ninth, sealing the game at 9-8.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Zach Croonquist (1-0) captured his first win of the year, while Tyson Gau took the loss for Augustana.

UNO returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 27, facing Augustana at 11 a.m. in Joplin, Mo.
