SEATTLE, Wash. – The UNO men's basketball team wrapped up play at the Elgin Baylor Classic on Friday night, falling 93-83 to Coppin State at KeyArena. With the loss, the Mavericks fell to 6-10 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 5-8.
Mitch Albers led the Mavericks with 24 points, while
CJ Carter scored a career-high 21 points on 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
John Karhoff added 19 points.
Alex Welhouse had nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Mavericks came out on fire, hitting their first four 3-pointers to jump out to a 12-0 lead in the first two minutes. Carter opened with a 3 on the Mavs' first possession, and after a Welhouse trey, Carter drained two more long-range bombs to make it 12-0 with 18:01 left in the first half.
Coppin State battled back with seven straight points, but the Mavs withstood the spurt. After the Eagles pulled within two at 19-17 with 12:57 left, UNO ran off eight straight points to make it 27-17 with 10:30 left in the half. Albers keyed the run with six points for UNO.
Leading 32-20 after a layup by
Isiah Gandy with 9:20 left, Coppin State began to take over the game. The Eagles closed the half on a 19-4 run to take a 39-36 halftime lead. The Eagles held UNO scoreless for 5:11 during that span.
UNO crept back within one early in the second half when Carter hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game to make it 44-43 with 17:00 left in the game. But the Eagles gained separation again, reeling off a 9-0 run to make it 53-43 with 15:43 remaining.
The Mavericks crawled back into the game though after
Mitchell Farr nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six, 68-62, with 7:54 left. Albers then scored from close range to cut the deficit to four, 68-64, with 6:44 left, but Coppin State scored the next seven points, and UNO would get no closer the rest of the way.
Coppin State had five players in double figures, led by Michael Harper's 19 points.
UNO hits the road again next week for a pair of games in Colorado. The Mavs play at Colorado State on Saturday, Jan. 7, then follow with a game at Johnson & Wales on Sunday, Jan. 8.
