OMAHA, Neb. –
The UNO men's basketball team faced a former MIAA foe on Tuesday night, falling 73-63 to Washburn at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the loss, the Mavericks are 2-5 on the season, while the Ichabods improve to 5-2.

Junior forward Alex Welhouse led the Mavericks with 16 points and six rebounds, finishing 3-for-3 from behind the arc. He added two steals and an assist and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line.

Senior guard Mitch Albers also finished in double figures with 11 points, which moved him into the top five in school history for career scoring. Albers now has 1,394 points in his four-year career.

In addition, freshman guard CJ Carter posted 10 points, three rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

Washburn was led by three players in double-figure scoring: Will McNeill (18), Bobby Chipman (12) and Martin Mitchell (11). Alex North and Kyle Wiggins pulled down seven boards apiece.

As a team, WU shot 42.6 percent from the floor and 42.1 percent from 3-point range, while Nebraska Omaha was 41.5 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from behind the arc. The Ichabods had a strong game on the glass, grabbing 39 rebounds, including 13 offensive boards, to UNO's 26 rebounds.

Jeff Reid got Washburn on the board first, but Welhouse tied it at 3-3 with a trey of his own. Down 7-3, Albers hit a layup, and the Mavs stayed within striking range on junior Bill Freeman's jumper that made it 13-11. The Ichabods responded by scoring five unanswered points, then took it out to a 26-19 advantage.

After a 3-pointer by Steffensmeier cut it to 26-24, Washburn rattled off a 10-0 run to go ahead 34-24. The Ichabods capped the half with a final triple from Mitch Allen, giving WU a 41-27 advantage by the half.

In the second half, WU opened with a jumper from Martin and a layup by Riggins to push it to 45-27 for their largest lead of the game. The Mavericks came back with a 12-0 run with scoring from four different players, making it 46-39. After a pair of Welhouse free throws, UNO was held silent for over four minutes until Carter broke through for a three.

Two more charity shots from Steffensmeier cut the deficit to less than 10, and layups by Hagerbaumer and Welhouse, followed by a trey from Farr, brought it to 60-53. Washburn then took a 12-point lead again on Chipman's 3-pointer and two North free throws with just under four minutes to go.

Hagerbaumer threw down a dunk to keep it within 10, but the Ichabods rattled off six straight points before two final UNO 3-pointers capped the final score at 73-63.

Nebraska Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 3, traveling to Northern Illinois. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill.
