OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 1-ranked UNO wrestling team got back on the winning track in dominating fashion, earning a 33-7 win over No. 5 Central Oklahoma on Friday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavs (6-1 in duals) jumped out to a 12-4 lead after three weights and never looked back. After dropping a 19-18 dual to No. 3 St. Cloud State last week, the Mavs came out hungry to prove a point, as all seven ranked Mavs won their bouts and Cody Tyler added a pin at 125 to kick things off. The Bronchos fell to 12-4 in duals this season with the loss.
With the dual beginning at 125 pounds, Tyler got the Mavericks off to a good start with a pin of Central Oklahoma's Zach Housley at 6:43. Tyler and Housley were involved in a high-scoring affair, with Tyler leading 13-11 before he got Housley on his back for the pin and his first dual win of the season.
At 133 pounds, seventh-ranked Trison Graham got a major decision against Trent Cox, outlasting the redshirt freshman, 11-3, to pull the Bronchos within 6-4.
Top-ranked Mario Morgan then won by forfeit at 141 pounds to give UNO a 12-4 lead.
No. 1 Esai Dominguez extended the Mavs lead to 15-4 with a commanding 14-7 decision over Central Oklahoma's Austin Standage. After surrendering an early takedown to Standage, Dominguez escaped and then tallied six takedowns on his way to his 26th victory of the season.
Top-ranked George Ivanov then defeated No. 7 Cory Dauphin in a physical 5-3 bout to give UNO an 18-4 lead. Ivanov, who never trailed in the match, got a big takedown midway through the third period to claim a 5-2 lead and then fended off Dauphin's attacks for the win.
Nathan Sigman put up a valiant effort at 165 pounds against No. 8 Derrick Adkins, but Adkins held on for the 3-2 win, pulling Central Oklahoma within 18-7 at the intermission.
At 174 pounds, No. 3 Ryan Pankoke won his 22nd straight match this season with a 3-2 decision over the Bronchos' Kelly Henderson. With the bout tied 1-1 with 50 seconds remaining, Pankoke went in on a leg attack and got the takedown for a 3-1 lead. After allowing Henderson to escape from the down position, Pankoke held on for the win to give him a team-best 29 wins on the year.
No. 3 Aaron Denson continued the Mavs' dominance at 184 pounds with a pin in 1:55 of No. 7 Tanner Keck. Denson trailed 4-1 in the bout, but got a takedown and then the fall to put UNO up 27-7, securing the dual victory for the Mavs.
At 197 pounds, No. 8 Matt Baker upset No. 5 Jarrett Edison, 3-1, to get three more points for the Mavs. Baker, who lost to Edison 3-2 earlier this season at the Fort Hays State Open, led 1-0 to start the third period and got a two-point near fall to take a 3-0 lead and control of the match.
Capping off the night, No. 8 Taylor Escamilla won a 4-0 decision over Cody Dauphin at the heavyweight slot. Escamilla improved to 25-11 this year and 4-3 in duals.
UNO is back on the mat on Saturday, hosting in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney. No. 11 UNK is 11-2 in duals on the year and is coming off a 21-15 win over Central Oklahoma on Thursday. UNO and UNK renew their rivalry at 7 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
