OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball team entered the weekend in a battle for third place in the MIAA with Washburn, but the Ichabods captured a 88-79 win at Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday night. With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 10-6 (7-5 MIAA), while WU improves to 11-5 (8-4 MIAA).
Washburn outshot, going 57 percent from the floor to the Mavs' 40 percent effort. The Ichabods also had 42 points in the paint to UNO's 32, and took advantage of turnovers for an additional 13 points.
Junior guard Mitch Albers led the way offensively with 20 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Senior guard Tyler Bullock added 19 points and eight assists, and sophomore forward Alex Welhouse chipped in 15 points, going 4-for-6 from the field. Redshirt freshman center topped the effort on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds, and Welhouse and senior guard Torrian Harris each contributed six boards as well.
Washburn's De'Andre Washington and Logan Stutz each tallied 24 points, and Jeff Reid notched 14 to join them in double figures. Washington also had 11 assists for a double-double and pulled down six rebounds. Bobby Chipman recorded seven rebounds to lead the Ichabods on the boards.
Welhouse led the offensive effort in the first half, recording 11 points on 3-for-3 shooting from behind the arc. He and Hagerbaumer both provided a presence off the bench, as the redshirt freshman added seven points on perfect shooting from the field. Despite UNO keeping it close on multiple occasions, WU went ahead on a shot by Washington at 16:47 and never looked back, leading 43-34 by halftime.
Washburn never relinquished its advantage in the second half, leading by as much as 13 at one minute into the second stanza. Albers came on strong with 15 second half-points -- including a trey with two minutes to go – and senior Jeff Martin had a late 3-pointer of his own, along with three free throws – but it was not enough to escape the Ichabods. Stutz also had 15 of his points in the second half, and six charity shots and a dunk in the final minute put it away at 88-79.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 26, hosting nationally-ranked Fort Hays State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
