KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Torrian Harris scored a career-high 26 points off the bench and the third-seeded Mavericks held off No. 6 Missouri Southern, 89-83 Friday in the first round of the MIAA Postseason Tournament in Municipal Auditorium.

Nebraska-Omaha (20-8) survived on a day when the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds were upset. The Mavs, now the highest-seeded team left, will play seventh-seeded Emporia State Saturday at 8:15 p.m. in a semifinal. The Hornets knocked off No. 2 Fort Hays State, 65-61 in their first round game.

The other semifinal will feature No. 4 Missouri Western and No. 8 Washburn. The two semifinal winners will play Sunday at 4 p.m. for the championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

Harris went 8 for 13 from the field and 10 for 15 from the free throw line. He just missed his first double-double with nine rebounds and he added five assists.

Tyler Bullock scored 18 with a 7 for 7 effort from the free throw line. After going 14 for 14 last Saturday at Pittsburg State, he's now made his last 22 straight free throws going back to the Missouri Southern game on February 25.

Andrew Bridger, playing in his 100th career game, and Jeff Martin each scored 11 and Eugene Bain added 10. Matt Newman led the Mavs with 11 rebounds.

The Mavericks led by nine at halftime and then they held the advantage the entire second half, though they were never really able to put the game away until the final seconds.

After a dunk by Missouri Southern's Jason Adams at the 6:30 mark, the Mavericks went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-point lead, their biggest of the night with 4:34 remaining.

UNO kept the lead in double digits until Skyler Bowlin hit a 3-pointer for the Lions with 56 seconds remaining that made the score 83-76 UNO. Bridger then made two free throws before the Lions hit two straight layups to cut UNO's lead to five with 27 seconds left.

After two free throws from Martin, Bowlin hit a 3 to claw the Lions within four with 19 seconds remaining but Harris and then Newman each hit a free throw in the closing seconds to put the game away.

The Mavericks shot 48 percent in the game and 32 percent from 3-point range. The Lions (17-11) shot just 38 percent from the field and 79 percent from the free throw line.

The Mavs out-rebounded MSSU, 46-41 but committed two more turnovers (19-17).

The Lions led near the midway point of the first half. Adams hit a 3-pointer at 8:54 that gave them a five-point lead and then the Mavs erased that with an 8-0. Martin's 3 at 7:20 put the Mavs up by one and then a layup from Dion Curry ended the run and made the lead three. The Lions tied the score one more time but a 3-pointer from Martin at 5:16 gave UNO the lead for good.

Mariun Price led the Lions with 22 points as he hit six 3-pointers, all but one of them in the first half.

Maverick head coach Derrin Hansen moved into a tie for second in all-time wins at UNO, now with an 89-58 record. He tied his predecessor, Kevin McKenna, who went 89-33 in four years.

The win was UNO's first in the MIAA postseason. The Mavs went 0-1 last year in their first season as a member of the league. The win also gave the Mavs their seventh 20-win season in the last nine years.

The Mavericks swept Emporia State (14-14) earlier this year, averaging nearly 89 points a game in the two contests.
