OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha will have a new radio outlet when the 2009 – 2010 athletic season begins. KVNO, the university-owned public radio station, will broadcast all Maverick athletic events beginning with the football team's home game against East Central University on Thursday, August 27 at 7 p.m.
“We are looking forward to partnering with KVNO to bring UNO athletics to a broader audience and further our mission of UNO as 'Omaha's Team',” said #Trev Alberts#, UNO's Director of Athletics. “KVNO will give fans of Maverick athletics one spot on the dial that they can tune to for action all year long.
“Due to the strength of its signal, KVNO will be able to reach some parts of Omaha that we haven't always reached consistently,” Alberts added. “We also hope to grow our audience by inviting regular KVNO listeners to tune in to Maverick sports.”
KVNO will air all UNO football and hockey games and a large majority of men's and women's basketball games. When basketball conflicts with hockey, the basketball games will air on KVNO's new digital channel, KVNO HD2 (90.7-2). The digital station will be known as “Mav Radio.” The inaugural air date for the station will be September 9, 2009. Listeners will need a digital radio to pick up the signal over the air.
All games also will be streamed live on KVNO's web site, www.kvno.org and at the UNO athletic web site, www.omavs.com.
“This is an example of collaboration in action. Our students, faculty and staff will have a unique opportunity to work together in delivering Maverick athletics to the larger community,” said Dr. Gail F. Baker, Dean of the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media. “This exciting partnership allows us to continue to provide classical music while also expanding our audience.”
KVNO is a non-commercial radio station under the direct supervision of the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media (CFAM) at UNO. KVNO provides the Omaha metropolitan area with 24 hours per day of locally- and nationally-produced classical music programming, in-depth local arts information, and local news. As part of its mission statement, “The KVNO staff is committed to involving an increasing number of listeners, to advancing the excellence and growth of the arts, to maximizing the value of our services through communication technologies, and to assuming a national leadership role in public broadcasting.”
