OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks shook off a slow first half by shooting 62 percent in the second half in a 96-67 victory over Doane in their season-opener early Sunday morning at Sapp Fieldhouse. The game started just minutes after midnight on the first day of competition.
Four Mavericks scored in double figures and
Andrew Bridger had a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.
Jeff Martin led the Mavs with 18 points off a 6-of-11 performance. He made five of his nine 3-point attempts.
Torrian Harris and
Eugene Bain each had 12 points and
Dion Curry had 10. Curry was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
Bain added a team-high 11 rebounds to record a double-double and
Matt Newman came off the bench to pull in seven rebounds.
Up by just two at halftime, the Mavs quickly made it a double-digit lead. Bain got a steal and a slam dunk on Doane's opening possession of the second half. UNO scored the next six points after that to lead, 49-39.
Bain's lay-up at 12:09 gave the Mavs a 20-point lead and they built it to a game-high 33 points on a dunk by Harris with 1:44 remaining.
The Mavs shot just 40 percent in the opening half but finished the game with a 51 percent effort. The Tigers shot 36 percent in the game. UNO won the rebound battle, 51-34 and they had 54 points in the paint while Doane had 34.
The Tigers (2-3) led at eight different points in the first half. They scored the first six points of the game before the Mavericks scored six straight to tie it at the 15:16 mark. Neither team led by more than three points after that until Martin hit a 3-pointer at 4:48 to give UNO a 27-23 lead.
Bridger's fast break lay-up at 2:42 gave UNO a six-point lead but the Tigers came back and took a 34-33 lead with 23 seconds remaining in the first half. A three-point play by Bridger with three seconds remaining but the Mavs up by two at halftime, 36-34.
Bryan Meyer led the Tigers with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Curry added a team-high two blocks and two steals for UNO.
Nebraska-Omaha will continue action Wednesday at Rockhurst in a 7 p.m. game.
