ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The UNO men's basketball team ended a brief two-game losing skid with a 76-65 win over the Missouri Western Griffons on Saturday night. The Mavericks shot a season high 66.7% from the field in the second half to break open a tight game and improve to 9-3, 3-2 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
The Mavericks started well, gradually building their lead to 7 points on a three-pointer by #
Tyler Albers# with 8:32 to play in the first half. But the Griffons closed the frame with a 12-5 run and when James Bush made a layup with 1:10 to play, Western trailed by just 1. It was 31-30 UNO at the break.
The tight play continued at the beginning of the second half as the game was tied four times, the final time on a pair of free throws by Western's Lonnel Johnson. From there, the Mavericks would go on a 13-5 run keyed by a couple of dunks by #
Michael Jenkins#. With 3:23 left, UNO had opened up a 67-57 lead.
The Griffons would get the deficit back to 8 on their next possession, but team-high scorer #
Mitch Albers# followed with a layup to restore the lead to 10, and Western would never threaten again.
Mitch Albers finished with a team-high 19 points while Jenkins would score all 16 of his points in the second half. #
Dion Curry also had 16 points while Justin Petersen# hauled in a team season-high 14 rebounds, one off his career best.
Quentin Noblin led the Griffons with 19 points.
The Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 7 when they host the Truman State Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m.
