The University of Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team set a new school record for 3-pointers, earning a decisive 113-56 victory over Montana State-Billings Saturday night in the UNO Thanksgiving Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks (4-0) hit 17 3-pointers on the night, on 36 attempts, betting by two their old record, set last year against Missouri Western.
Mitch Albers knocked down six triples on seven attempts, leading to a team-best 26 points. In all, eight players hit at least one from long range.
UNO was also dominant on the glass, outrebounding the Yellowjackets (0-5) by a 57-34 margin.
Matt Newman and
Nate Owen each had strong all-around games, copying each other's line -- both had 10 rebounds, tying for the team lead, nine points and seven assists.
Utilizing a full-court press from the outset, the Mavs were able to explode to a 20-2 lead in the first seven minutes. Through the rest of the first half the lead would stay in the 20-point range, but UNO stretched it even more at the end, leading 63-28 at the half.
The Mavs gradually extended the lead even further in the second half, leading by as many as 61 points. The team's 113 points unofficially ties for the team's third-highest single game score ever. It is the first time the team has scored 100 or more in regular since the 2002-03 season, and the most points in a game since scoring 117 against Western State to open the 2000-01 season.
UNO hits the road for its next game, visiting Missouri Western Tuesday night at 7.
