Balanced Mavs Post 99-77 Win

Calvin Kapels scored 23 points and Zac Robinson 19 to lead five Mavericks in double figures in a 99-77 non-conference win Saturday night over Upper Iowa at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.

The win, the third straight for UNO, hiked the Mavericks to 13-9 on the season before hosting St. Cloud State in a North Central Conference game next Thursday. Upper Iowa fell to 2-19.

The Mavericks scored the first 11 points in the game and shot 57.7 percent from the field the first half in taking a 53-37 lead at intermission.

UNO opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 62-39 lead four minutes in, but the Peacocks eventualy sliced the margin down to 80-66 with 6:30 left to play. The Mavericks pulled away as Kapels hit a three-pointer and Robinson followed with two more in less than two minutes.

Kapels also pulled down 10 rebounds and converted on 14 of 18 shots from the foul line. Robinson nailed four of five three-point shots in tying his season high. Ryan Curtis added 15 points, Jamaal Byers 11 and Denny Johnston 10 for the Mavericks, who had all 10 players who saw action in the scoring column.

Nick Larson led Upper Iowa with 17 points, John Schutte added 16, Turmel Woods 14 and Ernest Addae 13.
