Mavs Shut Down York, 84-34

The Mavs held York College to 21 percent shooting as they cruised to an 84-34 win Tuesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. Denny Johnston led Nebraska-Omaha with 16 points and he was one of six Mavs to make a three-pointer. The 34 points for York marked the lowest allowed by UNO since Sioux Falls also was held to 34 in the 1950-51 season. The 50-point win was the largest since the Mavs beat Presentation by 55 points in the 1996-97 season.

Joining Johnston in double figures was Gabe Zwiener with 12 points and Michael Jenkins with 10. Zwiener pulled in eight rebounds and Jamaal Byers led the way with seven assists.

The Mavs (6-5), who led all the way, went on a 17-0 run six minutes into the game to lead to a 35-14 halftime margin. The Panthers shot 14 percent in the first period as they made just four field goals. In the second half the Mavs shot 63 percent as they pushed the lead higher. They made 8 of 11 three-pointers in the second half and Byers' three with 17 seconds remaining gave UNO the 50-point lead.

Overall, the Mavs shot 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the three-point arch. UNO made 13 of 16 free throws.

The Mavs will look for another win Saturday as they host Peru State at 8 p.m.
