QUINCY, Ill. -- Truman State took advantage of the Mavericks' cold shooting Sunday afternoon to edge UNO 64-60 in the championship game of the Quincy Holiday Tournament.
The loss ended UNO's four-game winning streak and dropped its record to 8-6, while the Bulldogs improved to 8-2.
Quantel Murphy, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Mavericks with 15 points and seven rebounds, while
Ryan Curtis added 14 points and nine rebounds and
Calvin Kapels 13 points and seven rebounds.
"We came out sluggish the first half and when the ball doesn't go in, it just adds to your problems," UNO coach
Derrin Hansen said.
The Mavericks shot just 32.1 percent from the field the first half and fell behind 35-26 by the break. The Mavs took an 18-14 lead seven minutes into the game, but then suffered through a 10-minute stretch without a field goal.
"Our intensity picked up the second half and that allowed us to get back into the game," Hansen said.
Murphy and Curtis combined for 10 points in the first six minutes of the second half as UNO sliced the lead to 40-39. A three-pointer by
Jamaal Byers tied the game at 47 with 5:18 left and he tied the scored again at 49 with 4:42 to play.
But the Bulldogs took the lead for good second later on a three by Chip Sodeman and Derek Lindsey followed with a field goal for a five-point lead. Murphy cut the lead to three, but the mavs missed three of their next four shots and the Bulldogs made five of seven free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.
Lindsey, Sodeman and Andy Calmes all scored 12 points to lead Truman State, while Calmes added a game-high 12 rebounds.
UNO improved its shooting only slightly, hitting 37.5 percent the second half, and finished with 35.3 percent to the Bulldogs' 50 percent. UNO connected on just four of 22 shots from behind the arc.
The Mavericks are idle until playing at Concordia-St. Paul Dec. 29.
