Robinson, Kapels Lead Mavs to Win

The Mavericks shut down Peru State over the final nine minutes and used a 13-2 run to claim their third straight win with a 75-48 decision over Peru State at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks have won six of their last seven games to improve to 7-5.

UNO converted 12 of its final 13 free throws in pulling away from a 47-38 lead with 9:08 to play. Zac Robinson, with 14 first-half points, led the Mavericks with 19 points and Calvin Kapels, with 14 in the final nine minutes, added 18 points.

The Mavs scored 13 straight points in the first half to build a 23-9 lead with 11:05 left and went into the break with a 35-21 lead.

The Bobcats battled back to trail just 47-38 on a layup by Brett Spiker with 9:08 left.

Kapels then scored eight straight points, spurring a 12-2 run. Three-pointers by Robinson and Kapels gave UNO a 62-42 lead with 5:25 left. UNO held the Bobcats to just two field goals in the final five minutes.

Marlis Lovelace scored 15 points to lead Peru State, while Dave Haveman added 13 and Brandon Barrett 10. It was the 10th straight loss for the 1-10 Bobcats.

The Mavericks will be in action next on Saturday when they meet Central State in a tournament in Quincy, Ill.
