Kapels, Mavericks Pull Away to 68-48 Win

The Mavericks used a six-minute, 18-0 run in the first half to pull away from Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday night and notch a 68-48 win in the Downtown Courtyard by Marriott Classic at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.

Senior guard Calvin Kapels scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead four players in double figures as the Mavs won their third straight game to pull even at 4-4.

The Aggies, winless at 0-5, held the lead three times in the first half and forged a tie at 19 on a three-pointer by Kyle Smith with 9:34 left. But the Mavs answered with 18 straight points, fueled by three-pointers by Kapels, Zac Robinson and Michael Jenkins to grab a 37-19 lead with 3:02 left in the half.

The Aggies regrouped with the last two field goals to trail at the half, 37-24, but could pull no closer than 10 points after halftime. UNO made 9 of 11 free throws and shot 50 percent from the field the second half to pull away to the win.

Kapels hit seven of 11 shots and also added six assists in the game. He hit all three of his shots from behind the arc. Quantel Murphy and Jenkins each scored 11 points and Robinson added 10.

Smith's 11 points and 10 by Eddie Moss led the Aggies, who were held to just 28.6 percent shooting from the floor the second half and 30.9 percent for the game.

UNO will be back in action Wednesday night at Missouri Western before returning home next Saturday to host Nebraska-Kearney at Sapp Fieldhouse.
