ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Mavericks started fast, but Alaska-Anchorage recovered to post a 79-66 win in the third-place game of the Disney Tip-Off Classic Sunday. UNO fell to 1-2 on the season before playing in a tournament Friday and Saturday at Golden, Colo.
The Mavs jumped out front 8-0 less than two minutes into the game before Alaska answered by outscoring UNO 30-16 the rest of the half to take a 30-24 lead into the break.
The Mavericks, ranked No. 13 in the pre-season NABC poll, defeated Presbyterian in the first game of the tournament, then lost to Southern Indiana in the semifinals.
"After getting off to a good start, we looked flat defensively," UNO coach
Derrin Hansen said.
Senior forward
Ryan Curtis led the Mavericks with his first double-double of the season, scoring 18 points to go with 10 rebounds. Senior guard
Calvin Kapels added 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists and junior guard
Zac Robinson added 14 points while hitting four of eight three-pointers.
"Our shot selection just wasn't very good and I didn't think we could match the energy level we started the game with," Hansen said.
The Mavericks will meet host Colorado Mines on Friday night at 9 CST and Mesa State Saturday night at 7 in the Colorado Mines Classic.
