CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team defeated No. 4 Minnesota State, 29-9, Sunday afternoon in the semifinals of the NWCA National Duals at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.

After the first four matches, UNO held a slight 9-6 advantage, but pulled away winning five of the final six matches.

The win marks the fifth consecutive appearance in the title match for the Mavericks.  MSU, Mankato defeated UNO 19-17, in overtime, in last year’s championship match.

The Mavericks will look to win their fourth NWCA National Dual title. UNO has won the dual in 1997, 2005 and 2006.

UNO faced an early deficit from the start when MSU, Mankato’s Andy Forstner opened the dual with an 8-5 decision at 125 over #Matt Rein#. The Mavericks answered back and won the next two matches. No. 2 #Cody Garcia# pinned No. 3 Tim Haneberg in 1:28 at 133 and sixth-ranked #Mario Morgan# followed that up with an 8-7 decision against Mankato’s John Putman.

At 149, No. 3 Tommy Abbott recorded a 7-0 decision over redshirt freshman #Esai Dominguez#, cutting UNO’s lead down to 9-6. UNO dominated the remaining portion of the dual, winning five of the final six matches. Top-ranked #Todd Meneely# pinned Justin Turek in 2:50 at 157.

No. 3 #Aaron Denson# (165) and #Brent Pankoke# (184) each won major decisions in their respective weight classes.

At 174, No. 1-ranked #Ross Taplin# tallied a 2-1 decision over Ben Becker and third-ranked #Jacob Marrs# recorded a 5-4 decision against Thomas Block at 197. In the final match of the dual, No. 3 Brady Wilson won a 4-1 decision over fourth-ranked Tony Lewis at 285.
