Behrns Signs 5-Year Contract
University of Nebraska at Omaha head football coach Pat Behrns has signed a new five-year contract that will keep him in charge of a Maverick program that has strung together 12 consecutive winning seasons.
UNO athletic director David Miller, in making the announcement Tuesday, said that “this is one of the most respected football programs in NCAA Division II and Pat Behrns is one of the most respected coaches. This contract ensures not only stability, but also the tradition of excellence that has been established.”
The new contract will begin July 1, 2008 and run through June 30, 2013.
Behrns has a 105-53 record at UNO in 14 seasons and is 141-80 in 20 years of college coaching. His 2007 team, 10-1 on the season, went undefeated in the regular season in capturing its seven North Central Conference title. The Mavericks made their sixth NCAA II playoff appearance under Behrns last fall as well. He was named the NCC coach of the year for a sixth time, the AFCA regional coach of the year and was one of five finalists for the Liberty Mutual coach of the year award.
Under Behrns, a David City, Neb., native and a graduate of Dakota State, the Mavericks have had 13 first-team All-Americans. He is the school’s all-time leader in victories, as well as in games. His teams have won eight or more games 10 times and have 10 or more wins in three seasons. After going 1-10 and 3-8 in his first two seasons in 1994-95, Behrns and the Mavericks have averaged 8.4 wins per season and only twice won fewer than eight games.
“I’m pleased with the contract because it will guarantee that the football program will be supported in a way that will give us the opportunity to continue to be successful,” Behrns said. “I really appreciate that commitment by the University.”
