Mavericks Dominate Brand Open

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Mavericks captured four individual titles Saturday in the Glen Brand Open at the Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse, dominating a field that included more than 120 wrestlers from 13 different schools. Sim Bribieseca, Jacob Marrs, Brent Pankoke and Ross Taplin all captured titles in their weight classes, while four other Mavs placed in the meet.

Bribieseca went 5-0 on the day, captured the title by defeating Dalton Jensen, wrestling unattached from Iowa State, 5-2, in the championship match at 141 pounds.

Taplin, last weeks NCC Wrestler of the Week, followed up an outstanding performance at the NWCA National Duals last weekend by posting a perfect 4-0 mark Saturday on his way to capturing the crown at 174 pounds.

Pankoke took home the title at 184 pounds, going 3-0 on the day, while Marrs was able to capture his second-consecutive Brand Open title at 197 pounds after winning the same division last year.

Redshirt freshman Matt Rein compiled a 4-2 record on his way to a fifth place finish at 125 pounds, while fellow redshirt freshman Mario Morgan went 4-1 and finished third at 133 pounds. Sophomore Bryce Boehm placed fifth at 285 pounds with a record of 3-2 and senior Marcus Hilario was able to take home sixth place at 157 pounds, finishing the tournament with a record of 4-3.

Nebraska-Omaha freshman Esai Dominguez, wrestling unattached, used three falls and a 17-13 decision over Ryan Moyer of Lindenwood, to capture the title at 149 pounds. Dominguez's performance earned him the most outstanding wrestler award for the tournament.

Nathan Sigman, also wrestling unattached, was 4-1 on the day and finished second at 157 pounds, his only loss came in the title bout where he was pinned by DeVaughn Perkins of North Iowa Area Community College.

Perkins who attended Omaha North High School before heading to NIACC captured the title at 157 pounds and was given the award for the most falls in the least amount of time, recording three pins in 8:03.

The Mavericks will be on the road next weekend with a pair of duals scheduled for Jan. 25-26. The team will stop in St. Peter, Minn., on Jan. 25 to take on Division III power, Augsburg, before opening conference action Jan. 26 against North Central Conference foe St. Could State in St. Cloud, Minn.
