CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The second-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team won the last six matches to pull out a 21-13 victory over No. 16 Mercyhurst in the first round of the NWCA National Duals at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.
The Mavericks will now face No. 17 Minnesota State-Moorhead at 3 p.m. Saturday in the tournament's second round.
The biggest upset of the dual was at 149 where the Lakers' fifth-ranked Brian Pogel won by major decision over top-ranked Todd Meneely, 11-3, handing Meneely his first loss of the season.
After that match, the Mavericks trailed 13-3 as Matt Rein (125) lost 9-3 to Mercyhurst's Payne Lint to open the dual. Mario Morgan then defaulted at 133. The lone UNO win in the first four bouts came at 141 where Sim Bribieseca edged Braxdon Scaletta, 3-2.
After Meneely's loss, Marcus Hilario (157) escaped with a 4-3 win over Don Cummings to begin the string of six consecutive Maverick victories.
