UNO Travels to Northern Iowa Open on Sunday
The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete in the Northern Iowa Open on Sunday, Dec. 3. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. It will be the first of two trips this season to Cedar Falls as the Mavericks will compete in the NWCA National Dual Meet Tournament on Jan. 13-14 at UNI.
Records & Rankings
The Mavericks are ranked No. 4 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association pre-season poll and four Mavs are among the top eight in individual rankings.
Defending national champions Cody Garcia (125) and J.D. Naig (174) are both ranked No. 1. Ross Taplin (165) is third and Jacob Marrs is sixth at 197 pounds.
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 28th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 262-101-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.
Last Week
Jacob Marrs won the Elite Division 197-pound title and Tony Lewis the heavyweight crown in the Amateur Division Saturday, highlighting the Mavericks' showing in the 600-wrestler Kaufman Brand Open at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
Each finished with 5-0 records in the tournament that featured some of the top collegiate wrestlers and teams in the nation. The meet is the largest single-day collegiate meet in the United States.
Lewis defeated Iowa Central's Jesse Martin, 4-1, for the title. Marrs scored an 8-4 decision over Augustana's Nate Buys.
In addition, Ross Taplin, 165, and Aaron Denson, 174, finished second in the Amateur Division, each going 4-1.
Other Mavericks to place in the amateur Division included Matt Rein, fourth at 125, 4-2; Austin Boehm, fifth at 184, 4-2, and Bruce Boehm, sixth at 197, 4-3. J.D. Naig was fifth in the Elite Division with a 5-2 mark at 174 pounds.

UNO will travel to Kearney, Neb. to compete in the Nebraska-Kearney Open on Saturday, Dec. 9 beginning at 9 a.m.
