Mavs Set to Host Kaufman-Brand Open

UNO will host the Kaufman-Brand Open on Saturday, Nov. 18 at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The meet, the largest one-day collegiate tournament in the nation, will get underway at 9 a.m. and will feature some of the top wrestlers and teams in the nation among all divisions. Over 700 wrestlers from approximately 40 teams are expected to compete.

Records & Rankings
The Mavericks are ranked No. 4 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association pre-season poll and four Mavs are among the top eight in individual rankings.
Defending national champions Cody Garcia (125) and J.D. Naig (174) are both ranked No. 1. Ross Taplin (165) is third and Jacob Marrs is sixth at 197 pounds.

The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 28th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 262-101-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.

Last Week
Senior JD Naig (174) and redshirt freshman Jacob Marrs (197) each placed second at the Harold Nichols Open to pace the Mavericks in the non-scored tournament which attracted over 300 wrestlers and 12 teams, including Division I schools Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, and South Dakota State.
Naig, the two-time defending national champion, finished the meet with a 4-1 mark. Marrs compiled a 3-1 record. Sophomore Tony Lewis (285) placed fourth in the tournament, finishing 4-2.
