Mavericks Earn Title Share with Win
OMAHA, Neb. - Junior quarterback Zach Miller ran for three touchdowns and a trio of Mavericks rushed for more than 100 yards Saturday, leading the University of Nebraska at Omaha to a 48-14 win over Central Washington and a share of the North Central Conference title.
The championship is the third in a row for Nos. 15 and 17 UNO, which is now
8-2 overall and 7-1 in the NCC. Central Washington finished its season at
6-5 and 3-5. The Mavericks now will await word on their first round
playoff assignment, with the announcement expected Sunday at noon.
Tailback Kyle Kasperbauer ran for 128 yards, Nate Wurth for 123 and Miller
for 117, giving UNO three 100-yard rushers for the first time in nine
years.
While the offense finished with 412 yards rushing and 482 yards total, it
was the defense that got the Mavericks on the board first. Linebacker
Kenny Onatolu blocked a punt and Trent Lyons nabbed the loose ball in the
end zone just two minutes into the game for a 7-0 lead. It was the third
straight game that UNO has scored on a blocked punt and the second straight
game for the Onatolu-Lyons combination.
The Wildcats answered with an 80-play, 15-yard drive to tie the game on a
three-yard pass from Mike Reilly to Will Bennett.
UNO regained the lead as Miller skirted the left side and went down the
sideline 39 yards late in the fourth quarter for his first touchdown. UNO
took a 20-7 halftime lead, missing the extra point kick, on a 13-yard
reverse by Pagel Williams midway through the second quarter.
Miller scored his second on a five-yard run four minutes into the third
quarter after a 67-yard drive and Kasperbauer made it 34-7 when he went 63
yards for a score a little over eight minutes later.
CWU again marched 80 yards to score early in the fourth as Reilly passed 21
yards to Chris Jameson.
But Miller capped a 66-yard drive with a five-yard run and Williams caught
a 14-yard pass from Greg Wunderlich midway through the fourth quarter for
the final points.
