Unger Named NCC Freshman of the Year
Shane Unger, who compiled a 35-11 mark this year for the NCAA II champion Mavericks, has been named the North Central Conference's freshman wrestler of the year.
Unger, a native of Madison, Neb., finished second at the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in the 149-pound weight class. During the season he won the 20 and under division of the Kaufman Open, the Dana Open and Brand Open while finishing third at the Nebraska-Kearney Open.
He qualified for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, where he posted a 1-2 record after being ranked second for much of the year. He was selected to the first team of the NWCA all-academic team with a 3.79 GPA in business management.
Augustana's Tom Meester, the 184-pound national champion was named the league's wrestler of the year and the Vikings' Jason Reitmeier the NCC coach of the year.
