Mavericks Place 3 in UNI Open
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Cody Garcia finished second, while teammates Jacob Marrs and Russ Taplin were fourth Sunday for the Mavericks in the 25-team Northern Iowa Open wrestling tournament.
Garcia, a redshirt freshman from Hutchingson, Kan., was 4-1 at 125 pounds. Taplin, a freshman from Abilene, Kan., went 6-2 at 165 and Marrs, a freshman from Clay Center, Kan., was 4-1 at 197.
The Mavericks sent 17 wrestlers to the 350-person meet and compiled a 43-29 overall record. No team scoring was kept. The individual finishes and records:

Three-time heavyweight national champion Les Sigman, who was wrestling unattached, won the 285-pound title with a 5-0 mark.
The Mavericks will compete again Saturday in the Nebraska-Kearney Open before taking a four-week break from tournament competition over the holidays.
