EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.- Omaha found a late spark from senior Junior Casillas to give the Mavericks a 1-0 road win at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
The 10th ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches West Region rankings, Omaha posted its third shutout as a team this season and second for senior goalkeeper Nathanael Sallah, the 13th of his career. The Mavericks out shot the Cougars (14-5, 7-4 on goal), limiting SIUE (2-3-2) to just two second half shots. Sallah grabbed two saves for his 18th career win.
The only goal of the match in the 69th minute when Omaha's (5-1-2) Casillas scored his first goal of the season and seventh of his career, assisted by senior Abdi Adan. Casillas' three shots and two on goal, while Theo Klein led the Mavericks with four shots and two on goal.
In a defensive first half, neither team had a shot until the 10th minute of play, and Omaha had the opening frame's best chances. In the 23rd minute, a beautiful cross from Wawa Palga was drilled by Junior Casillas off the far side post. Then in the 35th minute, freshman Maguire Perkins hit the crossbar in the top left corner. Mikey Stukenholtz had another solid try on goal late in the half in the 42nd minute as the game went to halftime scoreless.
The Mavericks now head into Summit League play unbeaten in their last three matches with the win over SIUE and ties with Drake and Houston Christian.
Omaha opens the Southern League slate Saturday night in Tulsa against Oral Roberts University at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast on the Summit League Network. Omaha was voted second in the Summit League pre-season coaches poll; Oral Roberts was projected third.
Omaha then returns home for three straight matches, league games October 2 against St. Thomas and October 5th against Kansas City, before hosting Creighton in their only remaining non-league game of the season, October 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets for all Omaha home games can be purchased online through OMavs.com/tix.
