Omaha men's soccer outlasted visiting Loyola Chicago 1-0 in a physical match at Caniglia Field that pushed the Mavericks to 4-0 on the season.
Goalkeeper Cole Stewart made his first career start for Omaha and earned his first career save in the process, giving Nathanael Sallah a rest and his team a boost. The defense in front of the junior from Missouri kept chances at a minimum, as the Ramblers had ten shots but only three on goal.
A tenacious set of attempts late in the opening half came to fruition when Theo Klein assisted Naz Astwood for his first goal of the season at 39:55. It was the senior from Bermuda's second career goal and first since his freshman campaign. Theo Klein earned an assist, building on his team lead in points (8). The Mavericks had several other solid scoring chances, including a blast from inside the box by Mathis Pilon St-Louis 73:27 into the match but it was turned aside.
"I think one of the things that is gonna make us pretty special this year is our depth," Mavericks head coach Donovan Dowling said. " We have guys that can come in and make a difference; we can win different types of football matches."
Their 4-0 start equals the second-best start in Omaha history. The Mavericks won four straight to open 2015 and six straight to kickoff 2017 en route to the school's maiden NCAA tournament appearance. It was their third straight win at Caniglia Field. Omaha's record for consecutive home wins is five set in 2020.
The Mavericks play next on the road at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Friday, September 6th. They return home to Caniglia Field on Monday the 9th to host Houston Christian.
