Mavericks Lose in Five to Wichita State

GREELEY, Colo. - The Mavericks had another close loss on Friday night as they were narrowly defeated by Wichita State 3-2 in day two of the Northern Colorado Classic.

Omaha drops to 0-9 on the season while the Shockers are back above .500 at 5-4.

Set by Set: (10-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 7-15)
  • At the start of the first, a series of attack errors put the Mavericks into 7-1 hole. Despite a couple of blocks from McKenna Ruch and four kills from Amanda Hardt, Omaha could not slow down the Shockers as they later went on a 7-0 scoring run to go up 20-6 en route to winning the set.
  • Down 10-4 at the start of the second, Morgan DeBow and Brynlee Arnold each logged their first kill of the day to cut the deficit to four. That was as close as it would get, though, as the Shockers came right back and wound up taking a nine-point lead at 22-13, later outlasting one last Maverick push to take set two.
  • With the Shockers making several crucial errors, combined with multiple kills and blocks from Hardt, the Mavericks took their first lead of the day in set three after a 5-0 scoring run made it 16-12. Though Wichita State fought back to within one, another 5-0 Mavericks scoring run grew their lead to 22-16, before one last kill from Arnold sending it to the fourth set.
  • Omaha and Wichita started off deadlocked at 14-14 halfway through set four. Hardt and Arnold led the way for the Mavericks with two kills each, setting up Ruch for the go-ahead kill to make it 15-14. Four more kills from Hardt and Ruch would add to the lead as they capped off a 10-0 scoring run to put Omaha up 22-14 and eventually force a fifth set.
  • After falling behind 6-1 in set five, the Mavericks scored four straight to cut the deficit to one. However, the Shockers responded by outscoring the Mavericks 9-2 over the remainder of the set to win the match.
