Yesterday marked the 51st anniversary of Title IX, the federal landmark legislation that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational institutions and gave women equal footing in education and sports. The passing of this law changed the trajectory of women's athletics and will continue to shape the future. Omaha Athletics had a busy 2022-23 celebrating the monumental 50-year movement. Below are some highlights Omaha Athletics did over the past year to recognize 50 years of Title IX.
Last summer, on the 50th anniversary, Omaha Athletics kicked off the celebration and initiated a "50 posts in 50 days" social media campaign highlighting significant women's athletic moments in Maverick history.To further recognize women's athletics, the department hosted four women's sports alumni events throughout the athletic year inviting former players to celebrate them and Title IX.
In a year celebrating 50 years of Title IX, Maverick women's programs shined. Omaha basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball went on to play in their respective conference championships, with soccer and softball being crowned Summit League champions and earning their program's first ever NCAA Tournament berths. Softball took it one step further securing the first ever NCAA tournament victory in the Division I era for a Maverick women's program.
Swim and Dive registered 179 personal bests during the 2022-23 campaign. Four swimmers earned Summit League Peak Swimmer of the Week and one diver garnered a Peak Diver of the Week award. Cross Country successfully hosted the inaugural Platte River Rumble where they finished 4
th overall and had Freshman Kamryn Ensley finish 2
nd.
Women's golf captured the program's first 54-hole tournament championship at the WIU Invitational earlier this year. Omaha women's tennis won four of their final five matches to propel them into the Summit League Tournament.
Omaha Athletics set four attendance records during the 2022-23 season and two of them came from women's sporting events. Softball set the all-time attendance record at Connie Claussen Field for a doubleheader against Nebraska with 788 fans in attendance. 1,252 fans packed into Caniglia Field to watch Omaha women's soccer win their first Summit League title. It was the highest attended women's soccer championship in Summit League history. Omaha Athletics doubled down on Summit League Championship records when they set a volleyball championship record with 1102 fans at Baxter Arena for the Summit League Tournament title match.
