Tulsa, Okla. -- For the first time since 2021, the No.3 Omaha Mavericks have upset the No. 2 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in a 1-0 shutout in the semifinals of the Summit League Tournament. In a defensive battle through most of the match the Mavericks pulled ahead late in the second for the victory.
The Mavericks improve to a 7-7-4 overall record on the season.
How It Happened
• The Golden Eagles got the first shot of the game at the in the fifth minute. The played defensively for the first portion of the half, not getting their first shot until the 12th minute when
Theo Klein fired one off target to the right.
• After finding a steady pace, the Mavericks kept up with the Golden Eagles, matching their five shots at the end of the half.
• The shots in the first can be credited to Klein,
Wawa Palga,
Thore Boehm,
Gonzalo Cuevas, and Boehm again.
• Of the five shots allowed in the first, only two were on goal.
• In the 60th minute the Golden Eagles made a big pass up the field to leading to a shot in the bottom right corner, but
Nathanael Sallah made a big save which was followed defensive push to clear the ball from the box. Giving the Mavericks a boost of momentum.
• Following the save, the Mavericks got two good looks on net, but the shots were just off net.
• It wasn't until the 80th minute that the Mavericks would get on the board. Sallah punted the ball up the field finding the head of an ORU player. Off the header
Maruki Kawahara tipped it to
Sokol Ymeraj. Ymeraj, in the midset of falling, made a connection to
Mathis Pilon St-Louis. With only the goalkeeper between St-Louis and the goal, he took a shot to the bottom right, finding the back of the net.
• In the 87th minute, Thiago Patto was given his second yellow card of the match, resulting in an automatic red card. With the red the Mavericks had the man-advantage for the first time this season for the remaining three minutes.
• The Mavericks defending the goal for the three minutes and upset the Golden Eagles 1-0.
Inside the Box
• The Mavericks and Golden Eagles were match with 10 shots each. The Mavericks got two on net compared to Oral Robert's four.
• ORU led with seven corner kicks and kept Omaha to just one.
• Fouls were in favor of the Mavericks as the Golden Eagles were called for 17 as opposed to Omaha's 15.
• Klein and Boehm led the Mavericks with two shots each.
• St-Louis scored his third goal of the season.
• Ymeraj and Kawahara notched their fourth and second assists of the season, respectively.
• Sallah made four saves on the night, and recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
• Sallah improves to a 4-4-2 record on the season.
• The win tonight broke a five game losing streak against ORU, dating back to 2021.
