Mavericks Continue Win Streak with Four Set Win over SDSU

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Mavericks dug deep in the fourth set against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits to secure their fifth straight victory.

Omaha improves to 6-10 on the season and 5-1 in conference play. SDSU remains on a four game losing streak in conference play and fall 3-14 on the campaign.

  • Although the Mavericks gave up the first point of the set, they quickly turned it around with a block from Shayla McCormick and McKenna Ruch, followed by a kill from Rachel Fairbanks. While the first half of the set went back and forth, Omaha had four straight kills, putting the score at 13-9. The Jackrabbits responded back with a six-point kill streak to take the lead from the Mavericks. Working their back from the deficit, Brynlee Arnold made a kill to tie the set 22-22. Arnold's kill was the start of a four point streak that would win Omaha the first set. 
  • In the second set, the Mavericks steadily grew the gap between the Jackrabbits. After a three-point streak, the Mavericks were up 17-10. The set closed 25-17 with a service error on SDSU. Amanda Hardt contributed six kills in the second set.
  • The Jackrabbit took an early four point lead over Omaha in the third set. Despite trailing, the Mavericks responded back with two kills, a service ace by Ivy Leuck and a block to tie it 4-4. The Jackrabbits put another six points between them making it 10-4, but Omaha came back with seven unanswered points putting them back in the lead 11-10. The Jackrabbits pulled ahead 20-17 after three offensive errors by the Mavericks. Despite the team's best efforts, they dropped set three 25-20.
  • McCormick opened the fourth set off strong with a kill from Rachel Fairbanks. While the Mavericks fell behind again, put up eight unanswered points. Three of those included service aces from Kenedy Schaecher. With a 14-7 lead the Mavericks continued to extend the lead to 17-8. As it seemed the match was nearing the end, the Jackrabbits made a comeback trailing by one at 24-23. The Mavericks fought for the match point and found success on a dump over the net by Morgan DeBow

Inside the Box Score

  • Four Mavericks recorded double-digit kills today, including Hardt, Ruch, McCormick, and Fairbanks. Hardt lead the charge with 13 kills on the game. Ruch was next in line with 12, followed by McCormick and Fairbanks with 11 and 10, respectively.
  • Erica Fava put up a season high 25 digs in tonight's contest.
  •  Ruch and Arnold but up four block assists each.
