Volleyball Sweeps Kearney in Home Exhibition

OMAHA, Neb. - In their one and only exhibition match before the regular season starts, the Mavericks swept Nebraska-Kearney 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Baxter Arena. Omaha took set number one 25-16, before taking the final two sets by 25-22 each.

Set by Set
  • The Mavericks set the tone early when they came out to a 5-2 lead to open set one. After the Lopers fought back to cut Omaha's lead to two points, Omaha went on a six-point run to make it 16-8. Rachel Fairbanks blocked back-to-back shots during the run, while rookie Morgan DeBow notched a pair of kills. Sami Clarkson closed out the set by recording Omaha's third service ace of the set.
  • Just like set one, set two was all Mavericks. Omaha scored at least three points in a row five times in the set. Shayla McCormick accounted for eight of those points (seven kills, one service ace). Marriah Buss had three kills of her own, while Clarkson reminded everyone why she is the reigning Summit League Setter of the Year by recording 12 assists.
  • Omaha ran into a bit of trouble in set three as Kearney jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Mavericks continued to trail late in the set, facing the prospect of losing their first of the day as Kearney led 20-17 late. Omaha was not done yet, however, as the women responded with a four-point run to take a 21-20 lead. The Lopers briefly retook the lead after scoring a pair to make it 22-21, but the Mavericks again came back to score four in a row to take the set and the match.
