Mavericks Sweep ORU for Fourth Straight Win

OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks finished off their penultimate home stand of the season with another big win as they shutout Oral Roberts 3-0 Saturday afternoon to win their fourth match in a row and sweep the season series.

Omaha maintains its hold on second place in the Summit League at 17-8 overall and 12-3 in conference play with just three matches to go. As for the Golden Eagles, they remain on the outside looking in as their 7-19 record and 4-10 conference mark place them in eighth.

Set By Set (25-23, 25-19, 28-26)
  • Just like on Thursday, the Mavericks opened the day with another stunning come-from-behind victory in set one. After Shayla McCormick scored the first two points of the day with a kill and an ace, the Golden Eagles came alive and proceeded to take a 13-7 lead. Fortunately, the Mavericks were ready as they responded with eight unanswered points, with three of those coming on McCormick service aces. Both teams traded blows for the remainder of the set, but in the end it was Omaha that came out on top thanks to two kills and three total blocks from Mariah Murdie, including the set winner.
  • Murdie continued her hot streak into the second set, as she blocked two more shots to kick things off, giving her a whopping four in a row. Later on, with the set tied 11-11, the Mavericks took the lead for good after a 6-0 scoring run featuring two more aces for McCormick. Kali Jurgensmeier would add a couple kills and a block to help guide Omaha to a win in set two.
  • Set three proved to be one of the wildest of the season as Oral Roberts threw everything they had at Omaha to try and force a fourth set. Initially, it seemed like their efforts were worth it as they took a 15-10 lead halfway through. Gradually, though, the Mavericks would claw their way back into the set and tie it at 19-19 thanks in large part to aces from Brilee Wieseler, McKenna Ruch, and of course, McCormick. After taking a 20-19 lead off an Oral Roberts error, neither team would be able to score more than one at a time as they traded points all the way to a 26-26 tie. At this point, the Mavericks were finally able to break through after Rachel Fairbanks got them to match point with a kill, and Jaiden Centeno shut the door with one last ace.
Inside the Box Score

  • McCormick's seven aces today are a new personal career high and the most any Maverick has had in a match this season. She also led all players with 13 kills as she eclipsed the 350-kill mark for the season (355).
