Mavericks Close Out Home Stand by Sweeping St. Thomas

OMAHA, Neb. - Entering the weekend looking to make up ground in the Summit League standings, the Mavericks finished off their home stand with their second sweep in a row as they topped the University of St. Thomas 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

With this win, Omaha is back at .500 as they now sit at 7-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play. St. Thomas, meanwhile, drops to 2-15 and 0-5 in the Summit League.

Quick Hits (27-25, 26-24, 25-20)

  • Omaha got off to a bit of a slow start in set one, immediately falling into an 0-4 hole to open the day. Marriah Buss managed to tie the set up at 6-6 after picking up her first kill of the day right after two straight from McKenna Ruch. Though the Tommies got back into a groove and later went up 12-9, a kill from Kali Jurgensmeier and a service ace from Shayla McCormick allowed the Mavericks to re-tie the set. Unfortunately, St. Thomas still had more in the tank, as they again took over and eventually found themselves with a five-point lead at 21-16. After the Tommies reached set point, however, Omaha fired off five points in a row, featuring two kills from Ruch and a kill each from Buss and Sami Clarkson. Even after St. Thomas managed to tie the set at 25-25, another kill from Jurgensmeier and a Tommie attack error sealed an Omaha victory.

  • The Mavericks again found themselves trailing for much of set two. Despite an opening kill by McCormick, Omaha found itself down 5-8 early on. Thanks to multiple errors from St. Thomas, though, the Mavericks were able to stay within reach. Down 14-18, McCormick scored back-to-back kills followed by another St. Thomas error to get Omaha within one. A pair of kills from Buss would end up giving Omaha a late lead, while a kill and a block from Rachel Fairbanks would grow this lead to 23-21. St. Thomas did manage to tie the set at 24-24, but fortunately for Omaha, Ruch would end their chances of a comeback with a kill and an ace.

  • With victory in their sights, the Mavericks came out strong in set three. Jurgensmeier quickly racked up two more kills, while Olivia Curry picked up her first service ace of the season as Omaha took a 4-3 lead. From there, the Mavericks' offense refused to let up, as McCormick led the way with a trio of kills, followed by Ruch and Jurgensmeier with two each to give Omaha a 15-10 lead. Fairbanks would then score the next three kills for the Mavericks, followed by Clarkson with her first ace of the day to make it 20-14. Mariah Murdie got in on the action too, as she sent one up the middle for her first career kill. Up 24-20, Jurgensmeier dealt the final blow to St. Thomas with one last ace for the Mavericks.
