Mavericks Falter vs. Illinois

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha volleyball fell in four sets Friday morning to Illinois at the Bluejay Invitational. The Illini took sets one, two, and four to outlast Omaha, 3-1.

With the loss, Omaha falls to 2-4 on the year.

How It Happened
  • The Illini used an 11-3 run to open the first set to set the pace of the match. Four different players recorded a kill in the run for Illinois. The Mavericks cut the lead to six in a 4-1 run highlighted by a kill from Marriah Buss, but Omaha trailed 15-9. Illinois pulled ahead yet again with an 8-2 run. Jessica Nunge tallied back-to-back kills to make it a 10-point lead for the Illini. Buss recorded two late kills for the Mavericks, but the set fell in the Illini's favor, 25-15.
  • Omaha and Illinois went point for point to open the second set, but the Illini pulled ahead with a 6-0 run to gain an 11-6 lead. They used another 5-0 run making it 17-9 late in the set. The teams traded points down the stretch, but Illinois took a 25-17 set two win for a 2-0 lead.
  • Set three opened with six lead changes and five ties before Illinois used a 4-0 run to take a 9-6 edge over Omaha. The Mavericks responded with a 3-0 run. Abby Plouzek knotted the set 9-9 with a kill to cap the run. Lakyn Graves then sparked a 7-0 run for the Mavericks. Sadie Limback and Fairbanks also recorded kills in the run helping Omaha to a 19-12 run. Fairbanks, Limback, Plouzek, and Buss tallied kills on the next six Omaha points to clinch the win, 25-18.
  • The fourth set was decided by a 14-1 run that led the Illini to a 20-7 lead over the Mavericks. Buss Graves, and Limback recorded kills, but it wasn't enough to spark the Omaha offense. Illinois went on to win set four 25-11 and the match 3-1.

Inside the Box Score
  • Claire Mountjoy's 19 digs was just enough to surpass the former all-time dig leader. She now holds the program record with 1,936 career digs and counting as the season progresses.
  • Her 19 digs was also a match-high.
  • Limback hit .476 in the match with a team-high 13 kills.
  • Buss (11) and Fairbanks (10) added double-figure kills.
  • Sami Clarkson tallied 37 of Omaha's 41 assists.
