OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha student-athletes have continued to achieve at new heights during the COVID-19 pandemic, registering the highest cumulative grade-point average in school history for the third consecutive semester.
UNO's 289 student-athletes earned a collective GPA of 3.578 for the Spring 2021 term, ahead of the previous record mark of 3.563 in Fall 2020.
"Every one of our programs was in season in the spring semester, and our student-athletes met the challenge head-on to balance unprecedented challenges in competition and in the classroom," said
Lindsey Ekwerekwu, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academic Success and Student-Athlete Development. "Together they achieved at the highest academic level in our athletic department's history.
"Their performance is indicative of the types of student-athletes our coaches recruit: quality young adults who proudly represent our institution and are committed to success," Ekwerekwu continued. "Our entire staff is proud of their remarkable dedication in all aspects of the student-athlete experience. Additionally, we are appreciative of our campus faculty for their hard work and support of our Mavericks throughout this demanding semester."
A total of 257 student-athletes, or 89 percent, earned a 3.0 GPA or higher in the fall, and 188 of them, or 65 percent, earned either Dean's List (3.5+) or Chancellor's List (4.0) honors. Every Maverick team recorded a semester GPA of at least 3.25.
Women's golf topped the team semester GPA list with an impressive 3.807. Four of its team members were named to the Chancellor's List, and four more qualified to the Dean's List. Women's tennis (3.776) and volleyball (3.776) tied for second.
Men's golf paced all male programs with a 3.767 GPA -- its highest in program history -- and counted all 10 team members on the Dean's List. Hockey (3.73) and baseball (3.456) were second and third, respectively. Hockey's mark also was a program record.
The Mavericks have now posted 18 consecutive semesters with an all student-athlete GPA of 3.3 or better.
