VERMILLION, S.D. – The Omaha track & field team finished in sixth place at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on Saturday at South Dakota.
"We had a couple of seniors leave it all on the track today, and that's all we could ask for," said head coach
Chris Richardson. "Jaycee (Schettler) did her ninth and 10th events today, and Scarlett (Hill) ran her tail off in the finals for the 400 meters. They're both Mavericks through and through, and they will be missed."
Schettler, who finished sixth in the heptathlon on Friday, ran in both relays in the final day of competition. She teamed with
Nina Cuevas, Hill and
Carrie Simonson to run a time of 48.40. Simonson closed a three-meter gap on North Dakota's anchor runner down the stretch, pushing the Mavericks into fifth place. The relay was good for four team points and was a season-best time for the Mavericks.
Schettler then combined with Hill,
Paige Blackford and
Vanessa Gunderson to earn sixth place and three points in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:04.06. Like the other relay, it was a season-best time.
Hill was equally busy during the championship. She also ran in the trials of the 200 and 400 meters on Friday and posted a time of 59.04 in the finals of the 400 meters on Saturday. It was her second-fastest time in the event this season.
Among the other highlights on Saturday, sophomore
Maya Nachtigal ran a lifetime best 1,500-meter time of 4:55.96.
The Mavericks earned 17 points in the championships. They finished one spot above where they had been predicted to finish in the Summit League preseason coaches' poll.
North Dakota State repeated as Summit League champion. South Dakota was the runner up, and South Dakota State took third.
