VERMILLION, S.D. – Junior
Sheridan Rodriguez picked up her second career All-Summit League honor, finishing third in the high jump on day two of the outdoor championships on Friday.
Rodriquez tied her season best with a leap of 5-07 on her third jump, good for third place. It marked the second time this year she's earned All-Summit accolades after earning second place in the event at the indoor championships. She picked six points for the Mavericks.
Freshman
Kaitlin Hellbusch rose to the occasion in her final attempt at 5-03, picking up eighth place and another point for the Mavericks.
Also on Friday,
Jaycee Schettler set a lifetime best in the heptathlon with a score of 4,389 that put her sixth overall. Schettler had two more lifetime event bests on her way to earning the PR. She opened with a leap of 15-04 ¼ in the long jump, 15 inches farther than her previous best. She then threw 100-04 ¾ in the javelin before finishing with a lifetime best time of 2:31.97 in the 800 meters, more than five seconds faster than her previous best.
By finishing sixth, Schettler earned three points for the Mavericks.
"I was really happy for Coach Sutton and her jumpers," said head coach
Chris Richardson. "They've been putting in a lot of work and came to compete today.
"Our seniors are also really stepping up and being leaders," Richardson added. "Their dedication is shining through with Jaycee coming away with her best ever heptathlon, and Scarlett qualifying for the finals of the 400 meters and then following that with a lifetime best in the 200. We now continue that momentum into tomorrow."
Also in the heptathlon, freshman
Taylor Ramaekers set lifetime bests in Friday's three events to post a PR score of 4,194. She started with a mark of 17-00 in the long jump and then posted a throw of 97-09 in the javelin, more than six feet farther than her previous best. She finished with a time of 2:41.83 in the 800 meters, almost six seconds faster than her previous PR. Ramaekers finished ninth in her first league championship.
Freshman
Kylie Johnson finished 11th in the heptathlon with a score of 3,714. She posted a jump of 14-04 ½ in the long jump and a lifetime best mark of 73-00 ¾ in the javelin throw before running a time of 2:53.79 in the 800 meters.
Roxy Denton put up lifetime best marks in the long jump (16-06) and javelin throw (96-08) but did not run the 800 meters and could not post a score.
In the 400 meters, Hill just missed setting a new lifetime best, qualifying for the finals with a time of 59.05.
Among the other highlights, the Mavericks picked up five more lifetime bests in the individual events.
- Kinsey Scheffler threw 37-06 ¾ in the shot put, more than 16 inches farther than her previous PR
- Denton put up a time of 15.26 in the 100 meter hurdles
- Chloe Sabatka had a time of 1:03.25 in the 400 meters
- Paige Blackford posted a time of 2:18.43 in the 800 meters; it was more than six seconds faster than her previous PR and also was a team season best
- Hill ran a time of 25.57 in the 200 meters
- Nina Cuevas posted all-conditions best times in the 100 meters (12.57) and the 200 meters (26.02)
