Omaha Set for Second Round Match vs. No. 4 Stanford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Omaha will face No. 4 Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday, May 2 at 4 p.m. CT.
 
The Mavericks made history Thursday night beating UNC-Greensboro in the opening round for the first NCAA win in program history. Stanford finished the regular season 9-2-1 (7-2-1) and downed No. 6 Washington, 1-0, for the Pac-12 Championship. The Cardinals earned a first round bye and open tournament action with Omaha Sunday.

Quick Kicks
  • Omaha made history Thursday night winning its first NCAA Tournament match. The Mavericks upset No. 23 UNC-Greensboro, 3-2, to advance to the second round.
  • Nil Ayats and Hugo Kametani scored two unanswered goals for the Mavericks to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Spartans tied the game with two goals in six minutes.
  • With less than three minutes left of the clock, Kametani put the game-winner away on a header off a free kick by Mitch Hammer.
  • Kametani's two goals scored in the match tied him for the single-season record. He is tied with three other former Mavericks with nine goals scored in a single-season. One more goal this year gives him the single-season bragging rights.
  • Head coach Bob Warming became the first coach in NCAA Division I history to take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament. Warming previously took Creighton, Penn State, and St. Louis to the big dance.
  • The win vs. No. 23 UNC-Greensboro is the second win in program history vs. a ranked opponent. It also marks the first win vs. a ranked opponent since 2017 when Omaha took down No. 17 Virginia Tech, 5-1, at Caniglia Field.
 
Scouting the Stanford Cardinals
Stanford enters the tournament ranked No. 4 with a 9-2-2 regular season finish. The Cardinals went 7-2-1 in Pac-12 action and downed No. 6 Washington for the title and tournament bid. This season marks the eighth consecutive season Stanford earned a tournament berth. No team has won more NCAA titles since 2006 than Stanford (3). They won six of the last seven Pac-12 championships.
 
Cardinals to Watch
  • Zach Ryan was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year this season. Ryan has 23 points with 10 goals and three assists this season. He leads Stanford with four game winners.
  • Will Richmond adds five goals and six assists. Richmond and Charlie Wehan lead the Cardinals with six assists on the year. Wehan adds three goals.
  • Between the pipes, Andrew Thomas has played 11 games and logged over 1,000 minutes. Thomas has only allowed eight goals and posts a .69 goals against average. He's totaled three shutouts and 23 saves this season and is 8-2-1 on the year.
 
Series History
Stanford leads the series 2-0 vs. Omaha. The teams met for the first time in 2016. The No. 25 Cardinals took a 4-0 win. The first meeting between Omaha and Stanford was in the 2014 season. The Mavericks took the No. 20 Cardinal Squad to overtime. Stanford escaped with a 2-1 win.
