OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha dance team brought home a national championship without ever leaving campus. It wrapped up its season by being crowned Division I Game Day national champions in the UDA Virtual College Nationals.
This year was the team's third time competing in this division. It placed second in 2019 and third in 2020. Teams competed virtually this year by recording their entries on campus and then submitting them for consideration.
The Game Day category requires teams to present their fight song, respond to a game situation with an offensive or defensive chant, perform a band dance and complete a timeout routine. UNO completed its winning entry in one take.
The Mavericks captured the national title with a score of 93.5917, edging runner-up Hofstra's score of 93.4584. UNI placed third with a total of 92, followed by Southeastern Louisiana (91.6) and South Dakota (86.4).
The Mavericks, under coach Mo Klug, pulled together their winning performance just six weeks after receiving approval to compete in the competition.
Usually a fixture at Omaha athletic events throughout the year, the dance team was unable to perform this year due to COVID-19 precautions.
